Professional Billing (E&M):
Changes for 2023

A major overhaul in 2023.

Professional Billing (known as Evaluation and Management or E&M) refers to levels of service for clinical encounters translating to professional fees. These rules are nuanced and often not covered in training. Additionally, there was a major revision for our ambulatory care in 2021 that has now undergone a similar major overhaul in the inpatient, observation, nursing home, emergency medicine, and consult space in 2023. The good news is that these changes were positive – they reduced the arbitrary burden of clinically irrelevant information – and are also welcome in aligning the framework for these care environments. CDI, Coding, and Compliance will share knowledge about these rules, whether you are learning them for the first time or trying to adjust to new rules after years of practice.
