How are we taking care of ourselves?

Thomas Miller, RN

The big thing for me is trying to be productive on my days off. I try not to just lay around, as easy as that is sometimes, and just try to stay active in the best way that I can. It doesn’t always happen how I envision it, but, um, I’m always working on it and trying to stay involved in my family too.

For me, it’s the little things. Like my grandpa is 87 years old and still plays golf. He’s really active and pretty dang healthy. When I’m with him, I tend to not care about my game so much and we just try to keep it pretty light and just enjoy each other’s company. So I try to go out with him as often as I can, or if I’m out there sometimes he’ll just magically show up and, and we go, because you never know when the last time that’s gonna take place.

After a short vacation last year, and no vacation the year before – this summer we are driving down to Galveston, Texas.

I very much appreciate life and each moment I have with my family and friends.

My goal is to get my three kids to all 50 states before my oldest one graduates. She will have five states left after this road trip. I’m a very goal orientated person and when I am able to reach my goals – which include my family, my girls, and my husband – while doing something fun that we love, even the car rides aren’t that bad. So my summer is essentially filled with water, swimming and my girls.

One of the biggest things I learned about taking care of myself is to turn work off once I go home. There are occasions where you have to respond or do things, but when it’s off, you have to leave it at the workplace. That’s one thing that has worked great for me.

One of my goals is to spend more time with family and friends

I recently moved to a lake home and this is the first summer there, so one of my goals is to spend time with family and friends. I’ve had different groups of friends come over to just enjoy being around each other.  That’s one thing that’s helped me relax more too.

I make time for myself at least 3 days a week to do an intense workout with my Peloton, which I bought in 2020 as a stress reliever during winter. I also incorporated a lot more yoga, stretching, and sleep meditations to my daily routine. I love it!  In the summer months, I do road bike rides with my mother-in-law. It’s such a great feeling to be out on the roads and trails enjoying nature.  I also enjoy gardening, tending to my lawn and flowers, and my husband and I like to sit on our deck and watch the birds that come to our feeders.

These activities help me feel more relaxed and help me escape the rush of daily life.  Because for me,  it’s time to just not worry about anything.

Ann Schiller, RN, Cardiac Rehab Coordinator

I have two little children and they’re starting to be in activities within the community, so this summer we’re spending a lot of time at the lake and just being outside.

Mental health is such a big part of your physical health.

Ann Schiller, RN, Cardiac Rehab Coordinator

I recently started journaling, which is something I was never really interested in or really knew how to do, but I found a journal online that gives me prompts. It asks questions like: “list five things you’re grateful for,” or “tell me about something you were frustrated with.” So it guides you what to write about, which I have found helpful.

Mental health is such a big part of your physical health. If you’re feeling down or depressed, you’re not going to want to get up and move and do those other things.
