Cindy’s Blog: I See the Light
On Tuesday, January 18, I rounded at Rice Hospital. As have most of our front-line staff, the people serving our patients at Rice have worked at truly heroic levels and I simply wanted to offer thanks. As has been my experience no matter where or when I’ve spent time with our people, I left with my bucket full. One of our ER physicians spoke to the stress of boarding critically ill patients for days. His biggest concern beyond our patients, however, was not himself, but how we were looking after each other. Our nursing staff spoke not to their own stresses but wanted to ensure that I checked in with the ICU staff. Our people are not only caring for our patients, but we are also caring for each other as well.
The next morning, on my way to Paynesville, I was awed by the sight of this perfect sundog.
It reminded me that even in the worst of times, there is beauty all around us. The beauty of a perfect winter day. The beauty of people exhausted, but coming to work each day with hearts and minds committed to the service of others. Though we are tired now, that commitment will leave a legacy of love delivered, strength shared, and lives saved.
I see the light. It is you.
