Debra Klaverkamp, Social Worker

My father passed away when I was really young so my mother was a single mom. She was actually a lunch lady at our school in Edina. The only reason we could afford to stay in Edina after my father died was because his grandfather purchased our home so my mom wouldn’t have to move. So growing up in an affluent community and not necessarily having the things that my classmates had was interesting. It really shaped who I am and made me comfortable with who I am. I learned to be genuine. I also learned through my friends that you never know everything that’s going on with someone because you don’t know their back story. That experience sparked an interest in social work.

I absolutely love what I do. We have the best social workers and I couldn’t be more proud of our team. What’s most rewarding is when I work with people who really are doing the best they can with what they have, and they just need a little bit of extra help. Some people have such incredible stories of overcoming and when you get to partner with them it’s just beautiful. They’re often so appreciative, which is wonderful, but I always find it a little misplaced because I’m just so appreciative of them. I like to remind people that it doesn’t matter what you’re doing; it’s really how you’re doing it. You can make a difference flipping burgers at McDonald’s and you can make a difference as a brain surgeon. Sure, your tasks are important, but it’s the love and compassion that really matter.

Deb is one of a kind. A great friend and an inspiration to all. This ND kid wouldn’t have made it through Edina without her friendship.
