Hussein Yussuf, Ophthalmic Technician
I was 12 years old when my family fled our home in Somalia because of the civil war that broke out. We fled to the neighboring country of Kenya and lived in a refugee camp from the early 1990s until September 2015. So I did my elementary, middle school, high school and university in the refugee camp. I eventually became a teacher there so that I could help my community by educating the kids who were living and growing up in the refugee camp like I did. My family went through difficulties, but in reality, that experience was common among everyone living there – we were all just looking for security and peace in our life.
My family moved to Syracuse, New York in September 2015 and that’s where I started a new chapter. I trained to become a medical assistant and then received training to be an ophthalmic technician. In September 2020, my daughter got a job in St. Cloud, and I wanted to keep our family close together, so we moved here as well. I was hired as an ophthalmic technician in February 2021. I’m proud to serve the community and help people by being part of their medical team. My number one principle is to help those who are less fortunate. I have had people in my life help me when I needed it, so I want to do the best I can to pay that goodwill back to others who are in need.
