Kim Asmus, Educator, Information Systems

I was a single mom with three kids, all under the age of seven. I had been in an abusive relationship and just gone through a divorce because I wasn’t going to allow my kids to be brought up in that environment. And I didn’t want to be on welfare – that’s not me. So I went back to college – taking night courses because I was working part-time during the day – to study Health Information Management. In my last college class we created our resume and had to do a mock interview with a local organization. I interviewed with CentraCare. When the interview was done she asked when I was graduating, so I told her, “In two weeks.” As soon as I graduated, CentraCare called me and offered me a job. So my mock interview turned out to be an actual interview and I’ve now been here 24 years!

As an I.S. Educator, I love working with our providers and colleagues. I’m also really proud of my Epic HIM team because we work so well together. Our team is supportive and we step up to the plate whenever someone needs help. Fifteen years ago, I donated a kidney to a family friend and my coworkers were there for me. They gave me a sendoff with thoughtful gifts and they welcomed me back once I recovered. This organization has given me so many opportunities to learn and better myself, and I’m thankful for that.
