Martha Schelonka, Health Unit Coordinator
I am originally from Mexico. I lived in Matamoros, which crosses the U.S border near Brownsville, Texas. When I was 26 years old, I came to Minnesota and I have been here now for 26 years. I chose nursing as my career, because I love working with and caring for people. I eventually moved to St. Cloud and attended St. Cloud Technical and Community College. I’m a Health Unit Coordinator and my goal is to become an RN, but I’m taking it one step at a time.
I work in Melrose in Med/Surg as well as the ER and OB. I just love helping people. I always want to do everything I can to make people feel good. I think my mother instilled that in me. She not only cared for me growing up – she also cared for her mother, her aunt and other relatives. Through it all, she taught me to be compassionate and caring. She taught me love. And my father taught me to always be good to people, no matter their color or race. Being good to people is important because it nourishes your body and your soul. My whole life I’ve been taught to love God and have faith. I think that is what has held me together during the pandemic. That and the fact I love what I do. My work comes from my heart and being able to help people lifts my spirit.
Martha, It was so refreshing seeing the article about you, and what a blessing it is to have you on the team of Melrose nursing. Helping others IS what you do. With working with you back when I was in Melrose, you exemplified this and am glad you followed your passion, and are in the right spot. I’m sure you make an excellent nurse, as you did as a PCA. Great story, and great success. Thanks for all your hard word during this tough time.
MARTHA.AWESOME. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO . DR KURT
So well said Martha! Life can get so complicated, but the lessons you speak of are so important through all of it. Your words really spoke to me today. I bet those you serve can feel the care in every word and interaction. Thank you for sharing!
Martha – you are an inspiration with a wonderful sense of humor. Our residents and patients are so lucky to have you as part of their care team. I was so lucky to meet you at our mission trip to Puerto Rico.
Martha, what a wonderful story. Thank you for sharing your kindness and talents with our patients and colleagues.
