One-Time 8-Hour Training Requirement

On March 27th the DEA – Diversion Control Division sent out a communication to DEA Registrants outlining the one-time 8-hour training requirement for Medication Assisted Treatment as part of the MATE Act.  DEA Registrants will be required to attest to completion of this education for all new applications or renewals effective June 27, 2023. Effective June 2023-May 2026

3 Ways to Meet Requirement

  1. Board certification in addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry from the American Board of Medical Specialties, the American Board of Addiction Medicine, or the American Osteopathic Association.
  2. Graduation within 5 years and in good standing from a medical, advanced practice nursing, or physician assistant school in the United States that included successful completion of an opioid or other substance use disorder curriculum of at least 8 hours. This curriculum must have included teaching on the treatment and management of patients with opioid and other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of a substance use disorder.
  3. 8 hours of training opioid or other substance use disorders from an accredited group*.

Key Points

  • Training does not need to occur at one time.  It can be cumulative across multiple sessions.
  • Past training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.  Examples include:
    1. The 2 hours of required Opioid and Controlled Substances Prescribing training that was due prior to January 1, 2023.
    2. Past DATA-Waived trainings.
  • Variety of format options: live in-person/virtual sessions, seminars at professional society meetings, and online from an approved accredited group*.

*Accredited Groups

  • The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) 
  • The American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) 
  • American Medical Association (AMA) 
  • The American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or any organizations accredited by the AOA to provide continuing medical education
  • The American Dental Association (ADA) 
  • The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) 
  • The American Psychiatric Association (APA) 
  • The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) 
  • The American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA) 
  • The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) 
  • Any other organization accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (AACCME) or the Commission for Continuing Education Provider Recognition (CCEPR), whether directly or through an organization accredited by a State medical society that is recognized by the ACCME or CCEPR 
  • Any other organization approved or accredited by the Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use, the ACCME, or the CCEPR
