Steve Schrupp, RN, Emergency Dept. Manager

“Growing up, my mom was a nurse and my dad had a furniture store business in town. I worked for my dad during high school and college and always liked the business side of things. I got my associate’s degree in marketing, but realized I wanted to be a nurse so I went back to school for nursing. In the end, I loved the business world, but that wasn’t where I saw myself. I wanted a career that was about compassion and seeing improvement in people. In my role, my staff is my customers and I need to make sure they have what they need to do their job to care for patients.

I’ve had a lot of opportunities over my 43 years here. I even got to work together with my mom. For years I worked under her. Then she worked under me when I was her manager for many years. She retired and told me, ‘I liked it when you were in charge.’ I thought, really? Because growing up it sure seemed like she enjoyed bossing me around! My mom is 88 now. She lives next door at Mississippi Shores. She’s fit as a fiddle and sharp. She’s still taking care of people over there, whether they like it or not.”
