This Is Why I’m a Nurse: Dena Walz

I had two experiences when I was 16 years old that led me to nursing. The first was when I started working at the Foley nursing home as a CNA. I just fell in love with caring for people. Helping to provide care, getting to know them, and feeling like I was making a difference for the residents at that young of an age felt so great. I still remember there was one resident who didn’t have any visitors. The staff found her challenging, but she was my favorite. I tried to meet her where she was and she would always ask if I was working. I loved knowing I was a positive influence in her life.

“I loved knowing I was a positive influence in her life.”

The second experience happened later that same year, I was involved in a life-threatening car accident and spent seven days at St. Cloud Hospital where I received a couple blood transfusions. While it was scary, I was inspired by the nurses and remember feeling like I was safe in the caring hands of my caregivers. When I left the hospital, I felt like I knew each and every one of them. From that day forward, I knew nursing was going to be my lifelong journey.
