This Is Why I’m a Nurse: Amy Hilleren-Listerud

When I was young, my grandfather was hospitalized in the Twin Cities. I grew up in Danvers, MN, so as a small-town person going to see him in a big-city hospital, it was a big deal. I remember the nurses took time to talk to me, explain things and show me what it meant to be a professional RN. I realized they had this really neat role and I got to see all the amazing things they actually do. I thought, wow, these nurses are so cool!

“I thought, wow, these nurses are so cool.”

As doctors came and went, it was the nurses who were there, day in and day out, and they really cared for our whole family. I saw how they cared for my grandmother – who was this very frail woman going through cancer treatment at the time – and it really made a difference. That’s when I knew nursing was for me.
